Who are we?

The collegium consists of members of the BSVS with special interest in training, parity of university/non-university, French-speaking/Dutch-speaking.

What do we do?

Within the BSVS, the Collegium monitors the quality of training in vascular surgery.
The Collegium advises the BSVS board on training-related matters and works autonomously within the outlines approved by the BSVS board.
The Collegium organises the award of certificates of special competence in vascular surgery and the recognition of internship supervisor and training centres.
The Collegium prepares the renewed training in surgery, and vascular surgery in particular.
In anticipation of the official recognition of vascular surgery training, the Collegium is working in the same spirit on the renewed criteria for the certificate of special competence in vascular surgery, which will come into force from 07-2026.
The Collegium also facilitates the framework for this and, pending official recognition of the vascular surgery training, acts as the alter ego of the recognition committee.

Certificate of special competence in vascular surgery

Format for submission of application 

The application shall be submitted to the President of the Collegium by the deadline mentioned on the website.
This application must be accompanied by :
(a) an overview of the training followed, both vascular training during general training and an overview of the higher training followed (place, internship supervisor, timing).
b) a recommendation from the internship supervisors during the higher training.
(c) an internship booklet indicating the number of interventions performed in venous surgery, classical open vascular surgery, endovascular surgery and vascular diagnostics with the date the intervention was performed and the patient's initials.
The required number of interventions performed personally (as first surgeon) is :
- 50 venous procedures. These interventions may be spread over the entire training.
- 200 major arterial interventions on the abdominal aorta, the extra-cranial vessels
and the infra-inguinal vessels. The committee judges whether there is a balanced
ratio between the number of open and endovascular procedures.
- 100 diagnostic procedures (in the form of duplex examinations).

The Collegium reserves the right to verify the correctness of the interventions by all means at its disposal, if it considers it necessary.

(d) Proof of an oral communication at a surgical national or international congress.

Financial reimbursement
The BSVS provides a refund of 50% of the registration fee to BSVS members who pass the examination.  Proof of payment and a copy of the diploma are submitted to the Collegium.

How to become a FEBVS Examiner?

• Have the FEBVS Title
• Must have 4 years experience as Consultant

New recognition criteria for vascular surgery from July 2026 on

MESSAGE for those who obtained their recognition in General Surgery less than three years ago:

To obtain the new title in Vascular Surgery, certified surgeons must, among other requirements, demonstrate that they meet the required average annual volumes of vascular surgical activity. Procedures performed during residency training cannot currently be taken into account for this purpose.

As you only completed your training in 2023, 2024, or 2025, this period is too short to meet these requirements, and an alternative arrangement has therefore been requested. A proposal from the High Council is currently being submitted to the Minister for consideration. If this proposal is approved, procedures performed during your residency training (as outlined in your training plan) as well as during fellowship training may also be taken into account.

It is therefore important that you keep a detailed record of all your activities while awaiting a decision on this proposal. You should only submit your individual file to the competent accreditation committee after the final publication of any revised arrangements. You have until 1 July 2027 to do so.

Should it still prove necessary to formally comply with the requirements, your fellowship years (either retrospectively or for future years) may be converted into an official training plan.
