About
We are a Belgian society that respects the parity between the dutch and french languages. The Board of the BSVS consists of both dutch and french speaking board members, so there is always an equilibrium in languages. Because of this, we are also known as 'Belgisch Genootschap voor Vaatheelkunde, BGVH' in Dutch and 'Société Belge de Chirurgie Vasculaire, SBCV' in French.

The Belgian Society for Vascular Surgery

Who are we?

The Belgian Society for Vascular Surgery (BSVS) is an association for the professional interest of vascular surgeons in Belgium and promotes scientific knowledge in the field of vascular surgery.  You can find our statutes in the library section of the website.

We are a Belgian society that respects the parity between the dutch and french languages. The Board of the BSVS consists of both dutch and french speaking board members, so there is always an equilibrium in languages. Because of this, we are also known as "Belgisch Genootschap voor Vaatheelkunde, BGVH" in Dutch and "Societe Belge de Chirurgie Vasculaire, SBCV" in French.

All our members are invited to the annual general meetings organized by the board of the BSVS.

Different workgroups focus on scientific and educational items related to vascular surgery. The workgroups use the dutch or french language or can be bilingual. The different topics of the workgroups are represented in both languages. All members are invited to meetings organized by the board of the workgroups related to their language, but a workgroup can organize national meetings independent of language.

1991 - Marseille (France) : The excursion was part of a local congress of the Société de chirurgie vascular de Langue Française. The next day, scholars gathered to draw up the statutes of a BSVS because everyone agreed that such an association was needed in Belgium.  A year later, in 1992, the BSVS was a fact. (cfr. Raf Suy).

The definition of vascular surgery is the clinical and scientific discipline concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases affecting blood vessels and lymphatics.

This definition was formulated by the Board of Vascular Surgery of the European Community in Aosta on march 26, 1992.
